You are applying to become a part of the Monuments, Fine Arts and Archives (MFAA) Program.
As part of the application, you have to write an essay that makes a strong argument for what you think the priorities and purposes of the program should be and why. Make sure you consider the following issues: acknowledgement of both the potential for and the occurring destruction and looting of material culture; why it is necessary to rescue, protect and preserve cultural heritage during World War II and its aftermath; what is the overall political context for these arguments (such as, opposition to Nazism and fascism); and why is culture important in a time of war, atrocity, and mass violence. Support your argument by identifying 2 examples of monuments, collections, or single artworks that have been destroyed or that need to be protected. The examples need to be works we have discussed in class. You do not need to do extensive research on the artworks, but rather relate them and their situation to your argument.
Make sure your argument/document is well-supported with facts from class readings and lecture. Your essay will be judged on the strength of your argument, clarity of language, and professional presentation: correct grammar, spelling, footnotes, bibliography/works cited presented in an acceptable format.
