This is the course’s description, “Social policy is about identifying social problems and understanding the causes of those problems. More specifically, social policy analyzes the decisions that government makes, looking at who gets what and why. How do we create a more fair and inclusive society? What is the role of social services in improving well-being? How do we protect the most vulnerable among us?

In the first week, we will think about social policy broadly (aka the welfare state). Over the following four weeks, we will focus specifically on different topics within child and family policychildcare, pre-kindergarten, poverty alleviation for families, and the afterschool hours. We will be aided by Rhode Island experts representing four major actors when it comes to social policy: government bureaucrats, appointees/staff of the executive branch officials, nonprofits, and elected members of the legislative branch. In the final week, we will think about how these same social problems and issues are handled internationally.”
