Tom Chatfield’s Critical Thinking. Read the preface, pages 3-12.  (There is a summary starting at the bottom of pg. 15 and ending on pg. 16.) Read pages 23- 32 from chapter 1. (There is a summary starting on pg 34.) These pages cover basic concepts we will use in this course.

Finally read pages 43-54 from chapter 2, “Spelling Out Arguments and Their Assumptions” (summary at the end of chapter). You will apply the concepts from this chapter in your next writing assignment on social issues/social movements.

The learning goal of this assignment is to apply concepts from the first two chapters of Chatfield’s Critical Thinking (reading assignment 2) using a social issue article. Complete these two steps:

1.    TOPIC:

2.    Identify a key argument in your text. Do this by a) reconstructing the argument in standard form, b) identify the premises and conclusion, and c) spell out assumption(s). You can write in informal paragraph form. 350 words max.
