On the Missouri Controversy, please draw from the two documents assigned for this week that relate to this issue, John Quincy Adams’s “Reflections on the Missouri Question” and Thomas Jefferson’s “Letter to John Holmes.”  You might begin by addressing the following questions: Why did the question of Missouri statehood provoke such a crisis?  What were the moral and constitutional issues involved?  Why was Jefferson so perturbed by this issue?

On the Nat Turner Insurrection, and slave revolt in general, please draw from the excerpt from Nat Turner’s Confession and from David Walker’s “Appeal.” What does this document reveal about Nat Turner’s personality and his religiousity?  What do you think David Walker might have said to Nat Turner?  How are these two men different?  How are they similar?
