11:00 am CST, NASA will make an announcement regarding a (currectly secret!) discovery on the Moon involving the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA).  Your assignment is to watch the announcement live at https://www.nasa.gov/nasalive and report on it before our next class on Wednesday.  Your report should be a single-page document with a typical 3- or 5-paragraph structure.  You may use outside sources so long as they are referenced.  Your report can assume the reader knows anything we’ve learned in class already, so you should define any new terms you encounter in your research.

In your report, make sure to address the following questions:

What was discovered?  Does this discovery change anything fundamental about our understanding of the Moon?

Who made the discovery?  What institutions and individuals were involved?

How was the discovery made?  What instruments were used, what new techniques were employed, and how long did it take?

What is SOFIA, anyway?  What is unique or special about this instrument that made this new discovery possible?
