Your commentaries should be original and arise wholly from your own observations about the films, their approaches to the ancient world, and their place within the history of film-making. They should demonstrate your own engaged criticism no additional research is required or permitted.

Commentaries should speak to elements of genre and cinematic era, as well as highlight what you think the films director is communicating through his presentation of classical antiquity and the films portrayal of historical or historically inspired characters. Good commentaries will be concise and cogently written, reflecting awareness of the analytical techniques, critical approaches, and themes modelled in lectures throughout the course. You will be graded on both the quality of ideas present in your assessment and the quality and precision of your written work.
