The Formal Analysis Paper – Directions and Outline:

I. Written Form Analysis Directions:

1. Using the below as a guide, you are to complete a Written Formal Analysis of Your Own (FAYO) based on the series of five (5) Formal Analysis Exercises just completed.

2. USE AN ALL NEW WORK BY YOUR ASSIGNED ARTIST! The instructor will seek out your chosen work of art to compare your written analysis against the picture. If you use the Internet as a reference for the picture please provide a color jpeg or png in your paper (a picture of your image).

3.If you use the Sayre textbook you must use a minimum of 3 other sources. NO large blocks of quotes. Paraphrase and parenthetically cite.

4.The FAYO must be completed in the following format ONLY! There are NO redos.

5. The FAYO must be between 8 to 10 pages and it can be more, NOT including its Title Page and List of Cited Works.
b.It must have a title placed on its front with the following information word processed as seen below:

d. The FAYO must have as a List of Cited Works a single page at the end which list in alphabetical order the books, etc. used to develop and complete this assignment either in the  the MLA (Modern Language Association) format. Examples of standard MLA formats for crediting publications can be seen above.

e.The FAYO must use an MLA referencing style that includes citing the referenced works in the context of the paper and a bibliography at the end. Again, examples of standard MLA formats for crediting publications can be seen above.

f. Read the results of your hard efforts doing the FAYO before sending it to see if your ideas are presented clearly and logically, and, please, correct grammar and spelling as needed.

II. Written Formal Analysis Outline:

1. Follow the below outline specifically; do not be too creative in changing the required format, but be creative in your written thoughts and view points. 
2.Do not leave any part undone or do less than is required in terms of number of paragraphs required. 
3.If the outline is not followed specifically, it will be graded as is against the scoring guide.

Part I – Selection of the Art Object:
1. The selected art object for the written FAYO must meet the following requirements:

a. The FAYO’s selected art object must be a representational work of art only.
b. The FAYO’s selected art object must be in color, not in black and white unless your artist worked primarily in black and white.

2. The FAYO Statement of Intention: Begin the FAYO with a sentence or paragraph of intention, for example:

The intent of this paper is to make a Formal Analysis of an art object for better self understanding and appreciation. The work I have selected for this portion of the course requirement is etc.

Part II – Identification of the Art Object:
Please list the following information regarding your newly chosen work of art:

1. Title of the Work, if known
2.Artist/School, if known?
3. Year or Time Period Completed, if know?
4. Medium/Technique/Process used, if known?
5. Size (inches or centimeters), if known?
6. Where produced/found, if known?
7. Where located/housed now, if known?

Part III – Objective Description of the Art Object’s Subject Matter:
Within two (2) or more paragraphs provide all the information that is required as found below:

1.Provide an objective description only of the selected art object in the space below.
2. Do not attempt to explain what is going on, to interpret or evaluate the work at this point.
3.Just list the objects viewed and their spatial relationship to each other.
4. Attempt to write it in such a way that if your reader were to close their eyes, they could see the work in the mind’s eye.
5. Be very detailed and specific, pile observation on observation to make it complete as possible.

Part IV – Examination of the Art Object’s Medium/Technique/Process Used: 
Within two (2) or more paragraphs provide all the information that is required as found below:

1. Identify the medium:
2. Describe in some detail in the space below FROM RESEARCH the technique or process used (the basic tools and steps the artist would generally use) to create the work from its initial idea to the finished work. You are asked to describe what was first done, then what did the artist do next, and what after that in terms of the specific medium used. The textbook may have sufficient information for this aspect to be satisfactorily completed, however, it may be necessary in the future for you to do some research on your own beyond the scope of the textbook alone.

Part V – Examination of the Art Object’s Composition (Its Form Organization): 
Within two (2) or more paragraphs provide all the information that is required as found below:

1. Identify and describe a specific incidence of each Art Element found in the art object’s composition from the list found below:

Within three (3) or more paragraphs provide all the information that is required as found below: Identify and briefly describe the art object relationship to its culture and time period.

When doing so consider the following aspects in your written response:

1. present an overview of the current social, economic, ideological, religious and political structure or activities that impacts on the art object itself.
2. present an overview of the technological or scientific activities that has some bearing on the art object itself.
3. explain, if important, the role and function of artists in general in the art object’s cultural and time period setting.

Part VII – The Art Object’s Auto/Biographical Data of the Artist/School:
Within three (3) or more paragraphs provide all the information that is required as found below: Identify and briefly discuss the artist or school that produced the art object.

When doing so consider the following aspects in your written response:

1. provide an auto/biographical sketch of the artist or school that specifically leads up to the art object itself.
2. discuss the specific cultural context (music, theater, literature) in which the art object was produced.
3. explain the art object’s place in the history of art in terms of its art movement or historical era

Part VIII – Your Interpretation of the Art Object’s Content (your critical judgment):
Based on all the activities connected with the above, please respond to the each of the following questions with one (1) to (3) paragraphs as appropriate:

1. Describe the artist’s intention and to what degree does the art object communicate it?
2.Has the artist used the medium, technique or process sensitively in relation to the above?
3.How does it make you feel and think? Why?
4.How does it relate to you in relation to the world or universe as a whole?
5.In what ways does it remind you of other art objects seen or studied in this course? Compare and contrast this work to specific works seen in the course.

Clearly researched overview of social, economic, ideological, religious, and political structures (Up to 35 points)

Clearly researched role and function of artists of the time period (Up to 15 points)

Part VII: The Art Object’s Auto/Biographical Data of the Artist/School:
