Hello Professor Myers and Class,
Biological disasters are one of the most important and common types of hazards in emergencies and disasters. Therefore, it is essential that hospitals are prepared by having a biological hospital disaster plan in place. According to Aminizadeh et al., (2019), a major concern in todays society are threats caused by chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear incidents both accidentally and deliberately (p.1). As nurses it is essential to acquire knowledge on how to respond effectively and manage these incidents and their complications in order to provide stability and maintain society. We play a key role in reducing the harmful effects on public health as well as its psychological consequences (Aminizadeh et al., 2019, p.2). Planning and preparing is essential to ensure continuity in the healthcare system. According to Aminizadeh (2019), hospitals play a significant role in the early diagnosis and management of these incidents (p.2). Having an emergency management program in place is vital to deal with biological disasters and threats such as bioterrorism or infectious disease. Various tools have been implemented to assess the preparedness of hospitals for emergencies and disasters these include checklists, monitoring systems that observe disease development, specific medicines, and having special protective equipment on board (Aminizadeh, et al., 2019, p.2). These tools are key to preparing hospitals facing future biological events. Education in disaster preparedness is another crucial factor that all healthcare staff must be well versed in. To ensure adequate training staff and other organizations need to collaborate with each other to exercise the procedures and skills for these events to be prepared to respond in the event of a biological disaster. As mentioned by Aminizadeh et al., (2019), given the fact that biological events such as public health emergencies occur suddenly and their occurrence is low, most healthcare providers do not have enough experience and preparedness in such disastrous situations (p.2). Most healthcare providers reported not knowing how to don proper personal protective equipment in a biohazardous disaster. This was due to the lack of familiarity of most nurses with several types of PPE. Training on how to use this equipment is necessary because the proper use of this equipment, not only provides safety and security for the staff but it also is of high critical importance regarding the continuity of performance and functioning of hospitals in biological disasters. According to Fowler(2015a), as nurses we expose ourselves to a wide range of communicable diseases and infections therefore it is our duty to take all precautions that are available and be vigilant in their use (p.80).

Warmly,
Jane Doe.
