Week 5: Learning Materials
Overview
Whether or not your company has a union, you need to understand the National Labor Relations Act, the principal federal law that governs collective bargaining. If you belong to a union or represent management in dealing with a union, it is critical that you are conversant with your collective bargaining agreement, its work rules and grievance processes as well as legal matters such as unfair labor practices. While we will not have time to explore the fascinating history of unions in the United States or trends in union-management relations, you will enjoy this brief foray into labor law.

Learning Outcomes
Recognize issues raised by the National Labor Relations Act and other labor laws and how they impact human resource management practices in the workplace.
Critically evaluate the processes of union representation elections and collective bargaining.
Learn to assess and solve labor issues such as concerted activity, grievance processes and unfair labor practices.
